Perth Investment News – October 2026
Welcome to the October edition of Wealth News
In this quarterly newsletter, we share our latest perspectives on the strategies, legislative developments and investment markets.
During the quarter, the proposed changes to the taxation of family trusts continued to evolve. These proposals have attracted considerable concern within the community and have cost the Government some political goodwill. However, the amendments have done little to address the underlying concerns, particularly as they may limit the discretion that is central to discretionary trusts.
Bond yields remain a key market focus as large government deficits and significant private investment in AI infrastructure compete for a limited pool of capital. This demand is lifting yields and borrowing costs for businesses and governments. Against this backdrop, investment markets produced mixed results: interest rate-sensitive assets came under pressure as yields reached levels not seen since the early 2000s, while technology and resources continued to outperform.
Articles this quarter
The first article below examines the growing concentration risk within investment markets following the rapid rise of the technology sector. Index-aware investments are increasingly dominated by a relatively small group of technology companies. While this has supported returns in recent years, it may also increase downside risk if earnings disappoint. In a market downturn, this concentration could amplify losses as index funds sell these positions, adding to negative momentum.
The second article considers the retail property sector, which has delivered strong returns over the past 12 months and recovered some of the ground lost in earlier years, when investors were cautious about the sector outlook given the rise of online retail. The article highlights that while higher interest rates may moderate the recovery, well-located centres with defensive income, rental growth potential and active management remain well positioned.

When the benchmark becomes the bet
Global equity indices are increasingly dominated by a small number of very large companies. While some investors may have chosen this exposure deliberately, an allocation that appears low-cost and conservative has, in many portfolios, evolved into a sizeable unintended bet..
The resilience of Australian retail property
Australian retail property has emerged from a turbulent few years as the standout performer across the commercial real estate landscape.
