A career built on asking the right questions
Lucy Boswell has taken one of the most considered paths into the profession. Starting as a placement student in the Private Business and Family Advisory team, she grew through her studies and stepped into a full-time role before the ink on her degree had dried.
It started with a placement
Lucy graduated from the University of Newcastle in December 2025 with a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), both with Distinction. She has since commenced the Chartered Accountants Program, adding another chapter to a career that has been defined by a commitment to learning at every stage.
It was the practical, problem-solving side of accounting that drew her to the profession in the first place. While studying both business and commerce, Lucy found herself gravitating toward the work that connected theory to real client situations, and that instinct pointed her toward Pitcher Partners.
Access from day one
Lucy was drawn to the firm for the access it offered from the very beginning: access to experienced partners and team members, to meaningful client work across a broad range of private businesses and family groups, and to an environment where questions were welcomed and technical knowledge was applied in real situations.
“Being able to learn directly from experienced partners and team members, ask questions and see how technical knowledge is applied in real client situations really appealed to me,” she says.
“It felt like an environment where I could continue to develop both technically and professionally.”

Where the real learning starts
Starting as a placement student, Lucy worked mostly with individuals and small companies across trades, hospitality and health services. The variety was formative. Every client brought a different set of priorities, challenges and circumstances, and it didn’t take long to see that accounting is far from one-size-fits-all.
“Every client has their own priorities, challenges and story behind the numbers,” she reflects.
Many of those early clients she continues to work with today, relationships that have deepened alongside her own growing confidence and understanding of their businesses.
Puzzles, people and everything in between
As an Accountant, Lucy’s week might take in financial statements and tax returns, client meetings, monthly reporting, training sessions, or the kind of small accounting puzzles that require a bit of lateral thinking. It’s the unpredictability, she says, that keeps the role engaging. But it’s the client-facing side that she enjoys most.
“I love meeting with clients and getting to understand their business beyond just the numbers. It is rewarding to work through different situations and provide support that helps them feel more confident.”
The things nobody teaches you
One of the most valuable lessons Lucy has taken from her time at Pitcher Partners is the importance of taking ownership, asking the right questions, communicating early, and understanding the why behind a task.
“I have learned that small habits can make a big difference,” she says.
Being surrounded by people with different knowledge and experience has shaped how she thinks and works, building the kind of confidence that only comes from learning in the thick of real client situations.
Beyond the desk
Lucy has also made the most of Pitcher Partners’ community initiatives, participating in Spin for Kids and the Variety Kids Christmas Party, where she helped wrap presents and set up decorations for the event.
“There is a real focus on supporting causes beyond the day-to-day work,” she says. “These events are a great way to connect with people across the firm, while also giving back to the community.”
Outside of work, Lucy recharges with Pilates, the gym, walks around Newcastle, and finding new cafes to try with friends and family.
Just getting started
Looking forward, Lucy is focused on deepening her technical knowledge through the Chartered Accountants Program, taking on more complex work, and continuing to grow in her client relationships. In time, she’s also looking forward to passing on what she’s learned to more junior members of the team.
For anyone just starting out, her advice is straightforward: stay curious, ask questions, and bring a problem-solving attitude to everything.
“You don’t need to know everything straight away,” she says. “So much of the learning happens through real client work, conversations with the people around you, and being willing to give things a go.”
