Loi Tran: Warren Galgut Scholarship recipient

At 27, Loi Tran’s accounting career (and life) pathway has been one of courage, adaptability and a deep commitment to giving back.

Born in Vietnam, Loi Tran moved to Australia alone at the age of 14 as a first-generation immigrant, arriving without knowing English and with little familiarity with Australian culture.  Through overcoming these initial challenges he developed a strong sense of independence, an enduring drive for personal growth and a clear desire to contribute meaningfully to the community.

Driven by care for others

For Loi, there were a few stops along the way before committing to a career in accounting. After finishing high school, he started a career in nursing so he could support people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. His work in healthcare gave him not only the opportunity to care for vulnerable people, but also a way to contribute to the community that had become home.

A turning point met with resilience

In 2024, Loi’s path changed dramatically when he developed sepsis and was also diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve – an incurable genetic heart condition that requires ongoing monitoring and management of chronic pain and fatigue. The diagnosis meant he could no longer continue practising as a nurse. Rather than allowing this setback to define him, Loi began looking for new ways to use his skills to support others. Through his roles in healthcare and not-for-profit organisations, he had learned that strong business operations and finance management are essential to ensuring vital services can continue reaching the community – so he explored the pathway of accounting.

Building a new future through study

Loi is now pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University, with the goal of building a career in accounting and eventually qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. For him, accounting represents more than technical knowledge – it is a practical way to strengthen organisations from behind the scenes so they can continue delivering services where they are needed most. His dedication is already reflected in his academic performance, with a Distinction WAM/GPA and strong results across first-year core units, including accounting.

Beyond his studies, Loi contributes to the Deakin community through peer mentoring for Business and Law students and as a student leader in a foundational accounting unit. He is also an associate member of Deakin Beta Alpha Psi, supporting others as they navigate their own education journey.

The impact of scholarship support

As a first-generation immigrant from a non-English speaking background and the first in his family to attend university, receiving this scholarship is a significant milestone for Loi. It recognises how far he has come and eases financial pressure, allowing him to focus more fully on study and training while continuing to build his skillset, setting him up for a bright professional future.

About the Warren Galgut Scholarship

Pitcher Partners Melbourne established the scholarship in memory of valued colleague, partner and friend Warren Galgut.

Warren was an instrumental member of the Corporate Finance team, specialising in M&A advisory and financial due diligence. Warren was respected by his clients and peers alike, for his technical acumen and strong work ethic. He was a patient mentor to junior staff and well connected to all divisions within the firm.

After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), Warren spear-headed numerous initiatives to raise money for Fight MND. In typical Warren style, he greeted the challenge head on with humour, courage and an admirable honesty. Warren is missed by all who knew him and his memory is honoured through his scholarship.
