About the role
Reporting to a Manager, the Assistant Manager plays a pivotal role within the firm, partnering close with clients and the internal team to create value and drive improvements for our clients by providing comprehensive advisory services.
In this client-facing leadership role, you will be responsible for managing client relationships, overseeing workflow delivery, and coaching, mentoring, and developing people within your team.
As an Assistant Manager, you will balance technical expertise, commercial judgement, and people leadership, contributing to both client success and the ongoing growth of the firm.
Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Manager role is a diverse support function with key responsibilities in the following areas:
Accounting Function
- Prepare financial and management reports, forecasts, and budgets.
- Review and identify tax issues (e.g., Division 7A, CGT, SBE concessions, FBT) under Manager supervision.
- Support tax planning initiatives and identify compliance improvement opportunities.
- Stay up to date on accounting standards and legislative changes.
- Implement best practices in internal controls and documentation accuracy.
- Participate in mandatory technical training.
Systems & Processes
- Use Xero and other accounting software efficiently, support workflow improvement initiatives.
- Implement task controls and verify data accuracy within firm systems.
- Recommend improvements to existing procedures to improve efficiency and consistency.
Client Service and Relationship Management
- Serve as a key point of contact for day-to-day client communications, ensuring service quality and responsiveness.
- Support the Manager in preparing proposals, attending client meetings, and contributing to client growth opportunities.
- Maintain professional conduct and confidentiality in all client interactions.
Team Supervision and Development
- Provide guidance and coaching to graduate and junior accountants.
- Review work for completeness and accuracy prior to submission to Manager.
- Actively contribute to team knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving.
- Identify areas for self-development and participate in training sessions.
Who we are after
Essential Criterial
- CA or CPA qualified (or progressing towards completion).
- 5+ years of experience in public practice accounting.
- Proven ability to prepare and review financial statements and tax returns for various entity types.
- Competency in accounting systems (e.g., Xero, GreatSoft, Now Infinity, Practice Ignition).
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Time management and organisational ability under shifting priorities.
- High professional standards of integrity and confidentiality.
Personal and Technical Skills
- Ability to undertake various tax planning recommendations for clients
- Able to prepare financial statements and tax returns for multiple and complex entities including various trusts and corporate entities.
- Possesses a positive and proactive approach to delivering superior support and commercial advice to clients
- Strong numeracy and analytic skills with the ability to interpret and make sense of data
- Strong time management skills with the ability to be agile with changing priorities and deadlines
- Ability to act with integrity, honest and influence both internal and external stakeholders to build relationships
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently with supervisor and staff
- Ability to coach, mentor and lead staff
