People’s advocate and wellness ambassador
Boasting a diverse career spanning many professions, it was Niveditha’s natural curiosity and fascination for psychology that led her into a rewarding career in human resources.
Niveditha dreamed of being an archaeologist growing up, had a short stint as a child actor in a TV show, trained and worked as a journalist, and even ran her own baking business. Her innate curiosity and passion for connecting with people naturally led to a course in literature and psychology. “HR just happened: I wasn’t looking for it,” remarks Niveditha. “But once I found it, I knew it was the right fit.”
Niveditha has worked for organisations with as many as 30,000 employees, but was looking for a more direct connection with colleagues and her employer’s mission when a role at Pitcher Partners opened up. “I had a desire to work for an organisation where I could be more involved – to know and understand a business more intimately, more than being just part of the day-to-day. I feel that here at Pitchers because I’m able to build so many more connections - I have an extended team.”
Niveditha’s new colleagues were thrilled to discover she ran a successful side business as a dessert and pastry chef. Hours spent perfecting macarons and decorated cookies in her home kitchen made her an in-demand caterer for weddings and baby showers. However, moving to a new house with a tiny kitchen forced her to scale back her commissions. “I still get requests through Facebook to cater for children’s parties and weddings, but I only take requests from my manager at Pitcher Partners now!” she jokes. Recently, she baked cookies for the Buy-a-Bale initiative to assist drought-affected farmers, as part of the firm’s commitment to CSR.
A talent for making connections and bringing people together lends itself to humility and observation. Introverted by nature, Niveditha comes alive when talking about her role, and appreciates that it pushes her outside her comfort zone. The multiskilled and adaptable advisor looks after Pitcher Partners’ employee benefits, wellness initiatives, and staff movement across the firm. She is often on the phone promoting Pitcher Partners to potential collaborators for wellness initiatives, meeting in person to negotiate great deals, or talking to firm partners about new mental health programs.
Niveditha loves putting a smile on her colleagues’ faces with popcorn machines and discounted gym memberships, as well as making sure the serious side of mental health is addressed. “I passionately believe you need to invest in yourself before you can give anything to the world,” she says. Her work in running R U OK Day sessions inspired an open discussion in the office about mental health issues, and she is rolling out a new workshop program to equip all tiers of management with tools to assess and manage their employees’ workload. “The firm gives people the tools and support to look after themselves and the people around them,” says Niveditha. “I’m privileged to play a small part in that.”
