Tim Jonas took responsibility for the day to day management of the firm, as well as working with clients. From the beginning the partners decided that they wanted to run the firm as genuine owners, and Tim is responsible for establishing many of the inclusive and collaborative practices such as monthly full partner meetings and annual retreats that still exist today.
Pitcher Partners was the first new accounting and advisory practice to be established in more than 20 years in Australia.
November 1991 and Australia was in the middle of “the recession we had to have”. High interest rates, high unemployment and volatile stock and property markets.
Despite this, the partners and staff of Pitcher Partners went out on their own to form Australia’s first new financial services practice in over 20 years.

Pitcher Partners opens its doors
18 November 1991 – the new firm opens its doors – the departure from KPMG was amicable and so an agreement was made to initially sub-lease our existing premises at 161 Collins Street. Clients were contacted and given the choice of whether or not to go with the new firm. All graduates were offered positions within the new firm – by and large, most chose to go with Pitcher Partners.
“This is a great firm. It is driven by being clear on our values and vision of where we want the business to go and how we deal with our clients and our people.”
In 2005 just 14 years after we were formed, Pitcher Partners won the inaugural BRW Best Large Accounting Firm category in the BRW Accounting firm of the Year Awards.
This was an enormous accolade for the firm as it is a client choice award. We have subsequently won this award again (albeit in the mid size category) and made the finals several times, demonstrating why our commitment to client service is paramount.
Pitcher Partners Melbourne moves into its own building
In June 2006, Pitcher Partners moved to 15 William Street, Mebourne. Its own building, signifying the remarkable growth and strength the firm had achieved and was continuing to achieve. The night the sign was lit for the first time on top of our building is one many of us will never forget.
"I am a man not usually given to overt displays of emotion but when the lights were turned on at the new building, I remember hugging Tim Jonas. I normally think that pride is self-indulgent, but we were all proud to achieve that."
One consistent characteristic we find in our clients is their entrepreneurial approach to life and business. In recognising the need to be at the forefront providing the best service possible to our clients, and to have staff with the right skills and mindset to advise them, we established the Pitcher Partners Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
PPIEI gives our future leaders, both within the firm and from our client and referrer base, the theory, the skills and the qualifications to take their entrepreneurial spirit to the next level.
The firm’s third managing partner is John Brazzale and he sees the difference at Pitcher Partners as our client focus. Our competitors, particularly in the mid tier have had a tumultuous time with mergers, acquisitions and internal disputes. Pitcher Partners' client first approach means we can “influence regulatory decisions and outcomes and make regulators aware of the costs of compliance for the middle market. We are bringing the coalface to regulators, showing how their thinking can impact on commercial issues for our clients.”
Pitcher Partners opens in South East Melbourne
In 2013 after much consideration, Pitcher Partners Melbourne opened a second office in the burgeoning South East region. The firm recognised the huge and untapped opportunities, particularly in the manufacturing space, for a major accounting firm. This full service office has quickly became a major contributor to the business conversation in the region and a sophisticated offering to businesses who have outgrown their existing professional services advisors.
Moore Stephens Sydney merges with Pitcher Partners Sydney, doubling the size of the firm there.
