Logistics buff and team captain
Tom Murphy’s lifelong love of numbers has been the compass guiding him forward, leading him to a rewarding career in the accounting profession with Pitcher Partners.
At an early age Tom knew he loved numbers and this interest continued through high school. When the opportunity to attend a Chartered Accountant careers day in year 11 presented itself, he knew he couldn’t miss it. With small-tier, mid-tier and Big-4 options on the table, it was a cadetship with Pitcher Partners, where there would be an opportunity to make a real difference to clients, that stood out like a beacon.
Tom spent the next six years studying part time and working full time as a cadet at Pitcher Partners, achieving a Bachelor of Commerce and a CA qualification. Six years sounds like a hard slog, but Tom believes the opportunity to continue to grow and learn with mentorship from colleagues and partners put him ahead of the game. “There’s exposure to client projects early in your career at Pitcher Partners,” Tom says. The other advantage was Pitcher Partners’ strong social culture, so as well as plenty of study (Tom made us include this in case his mum reads this), there was a lot of fun along the way.
Tom has worked with the same manager since he started with the firm, who has given him the freedom to run his own projects and become a mentor. Now, as an Assistant Manager and Team Leader to a team of 10, including two graduates, Tom is a champion for growing and sharing knowledge, and encouraging participation and questions among his peers and firm partners.
One of the most satisfying parts of his job is the opportunity to transfer his wisdom to his juniors and pay forward the support he has received since starting at the firm more than a decade ago. “Initially, I didn’t expect Pitcher Partners to be anything more than a nice work environment, but I’ve made some of my best friends here. You have to like the people you work with to stay motivated and challenged.”
Tom specialises in private and family businesses – advising on matters related to business improvement, growth strategies and helping businesses manage their finances, typically when they find themselves without a CFO. Tom’s work often comes from overseas entities setting up subsidiaries in Australia, which requires innovative strategies, practical experience and a team effort to deliver results to clients.
Tom initially chose Pitcher Partners because he believed it provided the opportunity to make a difference, and this has certainly come to fruition in many ways – as a mentor, a manager and most importantly helping clients grow.
When you’re a teenager you make a decision based on “what you think you want to be when you grow up,” says Tom. Ten years on and pleased with his career path, Tom is confident he made the right choice.
